End of Course Material, Fall 2012

The final exam for Prof. Singleton’s sections of BIO230 is scheduled for the following times, and will be held in the computer lab in PAC185:

  • MWF  11 AM section:  Monday, Dec 17th, 10:15-12:15 PM
  • MWF 1PM section: Monday, Dec 17th, 12:45-2:45 PM

New material following the 3rd exam will include:

  • Gram positive bacteria: Chapter 19
  • Gram negative bacteria: Chapter 20
  • Viruses: Chapter 13
  • Specific viruses: Chapters 24 and 25
  • Additionally, the chapter on Introduction to Genetics (Chapter 7) will be VERY helpful to understand viruses

The above schedule is ambitious, and I do not expect that we will get through it all. We will cover the material on viruses by the last lecture.

The final exam for this course is cumulative. A significant portion of the final (approximately 40%) will draw on the final series of lectures dealing with our discussion of the above listing of pathogenic microorganisms. However, there are a number of topics that I consider of critical importance for which we will be responsible from the first 3 exams. Material that you should be familiar with will include:

  • Chapter 3 Cell Structure; pp 56-66,72-76,80-85
  • Chapter 4 Microscopy; pp 97-105,108-112
  • Chapter 6 Nutrition; pp 166-172, 176-179, 185-189
  • Chapter 9 Control; pp 258-261, 263-270, 277
  • Chapter 10 Antibiotics; pp 285-299 (understand the mechanisms of drug killing, not specific examples of antibiotics)
  • Chapter 14 Infection; pp 402-416, 418-420, 423
  • Chapter 15, Innate Immunity; pp 436-440, 444-448,451-453
  • Chapter 16, Adaptive Immunity, pp 460, 463-464, 466-471, 482-485
  • Chapter 17, Immunization, pp 491-497

BIO230 Exam 1 preparations

The first micro exam will be Monday, September 26th.  The format of the exam will be a mixture of multiple choice and free response questions. To facilitate studying for this exam, I have added a discussion board in Blackboard, which can be accessed by clicking the “Discussions” link in the course menu. You may participate in this process by submitting questions from the 3 chapters that will be on this exam (Chapters 3, 4, and 6) on the discussion board you will find there. If I feel that a submitted question is not getting to a deep enough level of understanding for that topic, I may reword the question so that I feel that it is appropriate. I will take a portion of the student-submitted questions, and include them on the exam. Please contact me to clarify any content expectations you may have, but also use the Learning Objectives I have posted in Blackboard to guide your studying.

The Second Micro Lab Practical

The second lab practical will be this Thursday, December 9th, and hopefully everyone has signed up for a spot on the door.  As noted in lab this week, we will be expected to have “practical” knowledge of the topics we have covered over the past 6 weeks in lab. What do I mean by “practical?” Well, I would recommend that you review any basic stains we did in the second half of the lab.

Additionally, the following topics should be understood:

  • Biochemical tests for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae, including the name/basis of each test, any reagents included in the medium during incubation and added following incubation, and the interpretation of each test
  • The difference between transient and resident microbiota
  • Staphylococcus: main species, tests used to identify, appearance and characteristics, media
  • Streptococcus: main species, tests used to identify, appearance and characteristics, media
  • Control by temperature
  • Control by osmotic pressure
  • Control by chemotherapeutics

Also, remember to bring in your lab journals to turn in at the start of the practical, and take home your lab coat at the end.

Exam 4 Material

This portion of the course gets a bit overwhelming, but I hope that the way I’ve presented the organisms through Chapters 19, 20, and 21 has served to give everyone a good survey of the diversity of microorganisms of significant medical relevance. Also, I have endeavored to reiterate concepts from earlier chapters as they arise here, for example regarding things like cell wall structure, endospores, exotoxins and endotoxins, and the response of the immune system to the presence of a pathogen. I wanted to give a listing of the organisms that we’ve covered in class for which we will be responsible for on Monday’s exam. For these organisms, you should know the major manifestations of disease, any significant aspects of the organism’s biology including significant virulence factors, and the treatments that might be used. Identification of Enterobacteriaceae lab report

The second unknown lab report will be due during lab the week of November 17th. Submission may either be done electronically via Blackboard (preferred) or as a hard copy during lab. Due to my receiving some student queries already, I am posting this brief outline of report expectations here. More information will be forthcoming in lab this week, and is printed in your lab handout packet, along with the grading rubric for this report. Read the rest of this entry
