Identification of Enterobacteriaceae Lab Report

The second unknown lab report will be due during lab the week of November 13th. Submission may either be done electronically via Blackboard (preferred) or as a hard copy during lab. Due to my receiving some student queries already, I am posting this brief outline of report expectations here. More information will be forthcoming in lab this week, and is printed in your lab handout packet, along with the grading rubric for this report. The format of the second written lab report will be the same as the first:

  • Title page, including your name and date of the experiment
  • Abstract on it’s own page. Again, the abstract includes a summary of the entire lab report, the introduction and purpose, summarized methods, results, and conclusions of the work done.
  • Introduction. Unlike the first lab report, the intro to this lab report should include a review of your unknown organism of at least 1 page, and should include at least 3 external (beyond the textbook) citation sources. One citation must be from a primary literature source. If you are not sure whether your source is a primary source, you should verify the appropriateness of that source with me! You should include information detailing the diseases caused by your organism, the prevalence of diseases, treatment of the diseases, and the prognosis for patients with those diseases.
  • Methods. Include only those tests that you performed identifying your unknown, but make sure you include the TSIA and MAC tests which everyone did.  In the methods you should include the biochemical basis of the tests you performed. Do not forget the antibiotic sensitivity measurements.
  • Results. Report the results for the tests you performed. It is not sufficient to only present your results in a table. Text must be included to help the reader.
  • Discussion. You need to include at least one figure, your dichotomous key used to identify your unknown. Present the key, and discuss the logic by which you ran your tests to identify your unknown. Indicate other results you might have collected that support your identification. If you had to rerun a test, discuss why the test had to be rerun. For susceptibility assays, discuss whether or not your results agree with what you found out about the organism during your research.
  • Works cited. As before:  LAB REPORT FORMAT-Fall 2007

Please use the comments you received during the first lab report to get a feel for where expectations are for this lab report.
